In other words, Christ by his Spirit so begins the work of transformation in the hearts and lives of his followers that two things follow: (1) we are given incentive to “keep in step with the Spirit,” to pursue conduct and attitudes in line with the Spirit of God; conversely, (2) where no transformation at all is evident, there is scant reason for thinking the person is a Christian.
